Consistent brushing is one of the most important factors when it comes to the long-term health of your child’s teeth and smile. To make sure they are brushing correctly and for the right length of time, we’ve included a handy guide and even a timer you can use below. You’ll also find a short list of products we recommend that you may want to take home with you.

Brushing & Flossing Tips for Kids

When your child’s first tooth appears, begin brushing only using water. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends introducing fluoride toothpaste at the age of 2. When your child is 3, they can begin brushing their teeth with supervision to ensure that only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is used. By the age of 6, they should be brushing their teeth independently. Along the way, teach them to spend 30 seconds in each quadrant of their mouth, making sure to brush the front, back, top, and sides of each tooth.

At Beachside Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we frequently use RiseWell, Prevident, MI Paste, and MI Paste Plus products because they are gentle, effective, and also come with and without fluoride. They can be particularly helpful for children who are more cavity-prone. We’re happy to make more individualized recommendations if needed.

Brush Timer

Ideally, your child should brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day, once in the morning and right before going to bed. This video can serve as a timer to make things nice and simple for everyone. Before you know it, you’ll both be whistling the song around the house!
